Day 2

Breakfast at the hotel

Your guide will meet you at the reception to start City Tour of Kyiv including inside visit to St. Sophia Cathedral.

Sights to visit during the tour:

“Volodymyr’s Old Town - the place were Prince Volodymyr the Baptist had founded his Kremlin and built the first Christian church in Kyivan Rus State that was destroyed in 1240 during Tartar-Mongol invasion. 

St. Andrew’s Church designed by famous architect Rastrelli who was a court architect of Russian empress Elizabeth (outside visit). Open-air souvenir market is located nearby.

St. Sophia Cathedral (1037) is the most vivid example of the Old Rus architecture and monumental art for this place, was built and decorated when the state of Kyiv Rus was living through the peak of its prosperity. Here grand princes were crowned and buried, formal ceremonies and receptions of envoys were held, the first known library in ancient Rus and the first school for boys and girls were founded by Yaroslav the Wise. The Cathedral was known as a seat of Kyiv Metropolitan. The interior has survived from the 11th century and there have been practically no alterations. Mosaics and frescos of the 11th century, executed with a unique technology, which depict Scriptural scenes, individual figures of Church Fathers, Apostles, warriors and maidens, are of a great value.

Sights to visit during the tour:

St. Andrew’s Descent is one of Kyiv oldest streets. In ancient times, the street linked the administrative part of the Upper City with the Podil, the Lower City of merchants and artisans. This steep, winding stone street is a traditional place for outdoor totes, festivals, and concerts and has a variety of interesting art galleries and shops. St. Andrew's Descent is like a cultural centre for Kyivans. Bulgakov lived there, the area around St. Andrew's Cathedral was the favourite place for walks for the famous Russian writer, Mykola Gogol. The Richard's Castle is also located there. It is at the heart of Kyiv's artist community and is a favourite stop for tourists and one of the best areas in Kyiv to find traditional Ukrainian crafts and art. Travellers come here to visit art-galleries, shops and studios. Be sure – you will leave this place with many pleasant impressions and nice gifts.

Museum of One Street
. Overall the museum boasts some 5,000 exhibits consisting of documentary archives and everyday items from different epochs in the life of the street. Among the most interesting exhibits are priceless books printed in Kyiv during the first half of the seventeenth century and a series of paintings, drawings, postcards and photographs representing the changing face of the street from the early nineteenth century until the present day.

Day 3

Your guide will meet you at the reception and take you to Kyiv Cave Lavra Monastery (including Museum of Microminiatures and The Golden Treasury Museum)

Sights to visit during the tour:

Kyiv Cave Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in Kyiv. The Cave Monastery is rich in architectural monuments. 37 of them were built before the 20th century. Its best-known sacred objects were the relics of its saintly monks. The caves (some of them dating from the Neolithic period) in which they lived and were buried, and from which the monastery's name is derived, form two underground labyrinths of tunnels, cells, and catacombs excavated in soft sandstone and loess. Several underground churches and chapels are located at the Kyiv Cave Monastery

Golden Treasury Museum. The Museum contains a collection of Scythian Golden Jewellery (very similar to the collection that is exhibited at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg – but more exciting because of the unique item – the Golden Pectoral (neck lace) of Scythian Tsars with sophisticated carving - weighting over 3 kilos. The museum also contains a collection of “Treasures of the Church” that were expropriated by the Soviets in 1926 and stored at the museum forever since

The Museum of Microminiatures. Mykola Syadristy has created about 100 miniatures with instruments he made himself. At first, he took a whole year to create one or two miniatures. Now, it takes him nearly a month of painstaking work to create one piece - whether it's baby swallows inside a nest made of half a poppy seed, or a red rose on a green stem 0.05 millimetres (0.002 inch) thick, inside a human hair that has been polished so thoroughly that the flower can be clearly seen through it).

After lunch visit to memorial complex and visiting the National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 years. 

The memorial complex covers the area of 10 hectares (~0.04 sq miles) on the hill, overlooking the Dnipro River. It contains the giant bowl "The Glory Flame", a site with World War II military equipment, and the "Alley of the Hero Cities". One of the museums also displays the armaments used by the Soviet army post World War II. The sculptures in the alley depict the courageous defence of the Soviet border from the 1941 German invasion, terrors of the Nazi occupation, partisan struggle, devoted work on the home front, and the 1943 Battle of the Dnipro.

The monumental sculpture of the "Motherland", built by Yevgeny Vuchetich stands 62 meters tall upon the museum building with the overall structure measuring 102 m and weighing 530 tons. The sword in the statue's right hand is 16 m long weighing 9 tons, with the left hand holding up a 13 m by 8 m shield with the Coat of arms of the Soviet Union. On the hill beneath the museum, the traditional flower shows are held.

Museum of Chernobyl exposition depicts the reasons of catastrophe occurred in 1986 on Chernobyl atomic station, tells about radiation influence on animal and plant life, about heroic actions of liquidators. Among museum displays there are declassified documents, maps, schemes, private items of disaster victims.

The description of Kyiv will not be complete without mentioning the picturesque river on the banks of which the city is situated. The Dnipro is the third longest river in Europe. The ancient Greeks named the river that ran from the North Borysphen. The Romans knew it as Danapris (hence the name Dnipro). The Slavs called it Slavutich, which means “the son of glory”. The Dnipro river plays a special role in the life of the city of Kyiv. In olden times thanks to the route “from the Varangians to the Greece” the city began to prosper and develop as an important centre of international communication and trade. Modern Kyiv is located on the both sides of the Dnipro river.

Enjoying the picturesque landscapes of the Dnipro river you will be able to view the modern Kyiv and at the same time to feel the great and unforgettable history of our country.  Blossoming of the Dnipro hills, blue waves, magnificent construction of Kyiv Cave Monastery, monument to Prince Volodymyr the Great, Vydubytsky Monastery, St. Andrew’s Church, Monument to the Founders of Kyiv will leave you with wonderful memories.

Ukrainian Museum of Folk Architecture and Peasant Homes – Pyrogovo. A visit to outdoor museum of National Architecture and Peasant Homes of Ukraine will give you a good idea how people lived more than 100-200 years ago.  You will see original peasants' cottages and churches delivered to the museum in pieces from different areas of Ukraine and later reconstructed on the museum's ground

Sights to visit during the tour:

Rynok Square
. “Rynok” (from Ukrainian – market place) Square has appeared in 14th century and is an example of typical square of medieval Western-European city. It served as a centre of trade and social life of Lvov. Square ensemble consisted of 44 buildings with town council in the middle. Each building of the

has its own history and is worth of attention! All 44 buildings were built by request of the elite of Lvov, earls, merchants.

Pharmacy Museum. Lviv pharmacists were first mentioned in the chronicles in the 13th century. Constance, the wife of prince Leo, founded a hospital and a pharmacy at the Monastery of the Dominicans. The pharmacy in this building was set up in 1735 by a military pharmacist Natorp. The Museum was opened in 1966. It has more than 2.000 items, including vessels, scales, instruments and manuscripts.

After lunch a visit to Arsenal museum and Vernisazh market

Arsenal Museum. It is the only one museum of weapons in Ukraine. The collection of “Winged hussars” (the 16th century) is one of the richest in Europe. Arsenal exhibits a great collection of old cold steel, fire-arms and cannons made in famous workshops in 32 countries of the world. 

Vernisazh – a souvenir market. The biggest open-air bazaar in Ukraine. Here you can find unique Ukrainian works of art, traditional Ukrainian souvenirs, presents. Paintings, famous old-Ukrainian undershirts, traditional cloth with embroidery, woodwork, glass-ware… You will not leave without a present!

Day 7

Your guide will meet you at the reception and take you to the castles of Lviv region.

Sights to visit during the tour:

Olesko Castle. Some 75 km from L'viv, high on a hill, stands Olesko Castle – an outstanding architectural  and historical monument of 13-18th centuries. In the 14th century it was a powerful fortress of Russ and in 1620 the castle was rebuilt in the style of Italian Renaissance. King Ian III Sobesky was born and lived within its walls. Today the castle houses a museum with hundreds of unique works of art and sculpture. Among them there are icons, portraits, great battle canvases and a large sculpture collection of 14-18th centuries. The Castle is surrounded by attractive parkland and there is an old monastery nearby.

Pidhoretsky Castle. Not far from Olesko Castle there is the important example of late renaissance architecture – Pidhoretsky Castle. The famous architect Andrea Del’ Aqua constructed the castle at the request of the great hetman Stanislav Kontsepolsky. Pidhoretsky Castle with the nearby Cathedral in baroque style together with the ancient buildings of the Monastery, the wooden Church, the Inn and an 18th century brewery form a wonderful ensemble, all set in a beautiful Italian park.

Svirzh Castle. In the beautiful village Svirzh on a hill overlooking the river and a beautiful lake, one may visit  the renaissance Cathedral and walk round remains of Svirzh Castle, built between the 14th and – 17th centuries.
