Sites to visit:The city was first mentioned in document dating to 1540. Traces of the earliest settlers’ dwellings have been uncovered in the suburban villages of Velyky Hlybochok, Petrykov, and Sturky. Sopilche, the ancient Ukrainian fortification built on the site of present-day Ternopol, was destroyed during Khan Baty's military campaign against the Carpathian region. In 1349 Galicia was occupied by Poland. Construction of a castle on the ruin of Sopilche - the nucleus of Ternopol - commenced in 1540. The castle suffered repeated damage from fires and devastation by war. In the early part of the 19th cent. Despite the ruinous effects of many wars, many important monuments of architecture, history, and culture have been preserved in the city. Many are eclectic in style. Castle, 1540. Built on the site of the former settlement of the former settlement of Sopilche. It was rebuilt in the 19th c. and all its defensive structures were dismantled.
